Treading the Boards...

Here's your Broadway news breakdown for today!

-Orlando Bloom will make his London stage debut in a revival of David Storey's In Celebration, telling the story of three brothers returning home for their parents' 40th wedding anniversary. That's just what theater needs...throngs of tweenie girls screaming "Orlando! Take off your shirt!" in the middle of Act II. Can you imagine the cell phones that will go off during the performance? Everyone under the age of 21 attending the show should be required to take a class on theatre etiquette before attending the show. It's a drama, and dramas about dysfunctional families always entice me. Maybe I'll check out Jamie Bell (aka Billy Elliott) taking over for Daniel Radcliffe in Equus and get a double dose of Britain's finest. Hunks, that is.

-Playbill.com announced today that Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell will reprise their Olivier Award-winning roles as George and Dot in Roundabout's Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park With George. Funny thing is, the show doesn't go up until January 2008. Why are they announcing it so quickly? There are like, 75 Sundays until then!

-Ok, don't freak out, but there's a musical about the Red Hat Ladies (should that even be capitalized?). I know. That's what I said. God help me if I ever find myself in the same theater as that show. I get a headache even looking at an old lady in purple wearing a bright red hat.

-Joey Lawrence (WHOA!) is currently making his Broadway debut in Chicago. It's no big surprise that the show is bringing a [kind of] big star in hopes of raising ticket sales. Billy Flynn is probably the most popular slot to stick a [quasi] celeb into the show. They've also been known to altar the choreography around the performer playing the role. Usher did a little ghetto soft-shoe number in "Razzle Dazzle," and I'm sure John O'Hurley did a waltz of some sort somewhere. Is Joey gonna tie a plaid shirt around his waist and do the running man? No? Then sorry, I'm not interested.

-The first ever Mr. Broadway pageant, showcasing the talent and beauty of Broadway's chorus boys, took place April 30. Competitors included Mr. Wicked (Kenway Kua), Mr. A Chorus Line, Mr. Mamma Mia! (Frankie James Grande), Mr. Curtains, Mr. Hairspray (Arbender Robinson), Mr. Tarzan (Nick Sanchez) and even Mr. Mary Poppins (Kevin Yee), which I'm sure will send poor Tyler to therapy for another six months (he's still workin' off going from licking biceps in Altar Boyz to sweeping chimneys (no, not those kind of chimneys) in Poppins. What I want to know is (1) Why hasn't this been done before? (2) Why didn't judge Scott Nevins take the grand prize (have you SEEN that guy?!) and (3) Where's the footage from the swimsuit competition?
